Each of your two kidneys has one million or more nephrons. A nephron is a structure that filters your blood, removing metabolic wastes and any drugs and toxins, while saving about 99% of the water and adjusting the blood's pH and concentrations of dissolved ions. The kidneys filter about 180 liters (about 48 gallons) of fluid each day.
